Lem Cue

Lem Cue (林橋) aka Ah Cue (阿橋) aka Lem Ah Cue (林阿橋) aka William Lemcue was born in China in 1843.

He arrived in Australia on the 20th of January 1862 on the ship "Wee Sing" which sailed from the port of Hong Kong. In 1869 he married Sarah Hannah Doncaster, and their first child (William) was born three years later in Wangaratta in 1872.

He was naturalised not long after in 1873 at which time he was working as a market gardener. He signed his naturalisation papers with which is pronounced Kiu in Cantonese.

He and Sarah had 7 children in total.

  1. William Cue (1872-1956)
  2. Henrietta Ellen Ah Cue (1877-?)
  3. Alice May Ah Cue (1880-?)
  4. Emily Grace Lemcue (1885-1956)
  5. Henry Ah Cue (1889-?)
  6. Rita Doncaster Ah Cue (1894-?)
  7. Lucy Maud Lem Cue (1900-?)

He died in Wangaratta in 1902.

橋 (Bridge|Qiao/Kiu → Cue) is apparently a quite uncommon family name in China, and a number of Chinese acquaintances have indicated that 林 (Forest|Lam/Lim → Lem) is much more than likely to have been his family name in China even though he adopted Cue/Ah Cue as his family name in Australia.

Lem Cue was my father's father's mother's father.
